Please bear with me, even if this may not always invite for a historical discussion, but nevertheless, it might be fun to join:

Perfect Duet, the comm for all things Master and Commander: Books and Movie, will be celebrating the Advent and Christmas season with a new version of the Advent Calendar 2016.

We cannot do it alone, so we invite you to join in the fun.

How it works:
1) For Livejournal, please comment at Perfect Duet here or at Perfect Duet’s sister comm on Dreamwidth to pick a date.
2) We'll add your name to the list. If someone's already claimed that date, we'll ask you to pick another.
3) If there are still dates left in a few days, you can sign up for additional dates.
4) Spread the word! Let people on tumblr and elsewhere know about the sign-up post!
5) On your assigned day, post something here (and/or at the dreamwidth comm) that's related to Master and Commander. It could be fic, podfic, art, vids, craftwork, meta, recs, anything that will brighten your fellow Aubreyad fans' day. (If you want to post elsewhere you can - just let us know so we can post a link to it here. We'll crosspost links from LJ to DW and vice versa.)

Pray sign up.

We are all looking forward to hearing from you.

A little about myself, as requested in the community profile:

Favourite historical fandom(s) - I like Hornblower and Master and Commander of course, but I also read about actual travels and sailship explorers with great interest. I enjoy more light footed stuff too: I've written some pirate fanfiction and have had a lot of fun watching "Black Sails" lately. I'm not picky, I'm more of a huge sea and coast romantic; heroic hardships in stormy weather make my heart beat faster. Might be a drop of viking blood, might be pure madness; who knows?

A book or website recommendation related to age-of-sail history - I had a fantastic time reading "The Terror" by Dan Simmons. It is minutely researched from what is known today about Captain Sir John Franklin's lost expedition of HMS Erebus and HMS Terror to the Arctic to force the Northwest Passage in 1845–1848. It is a darkly funny, gripping and truly chilling tale of the expedition's fate. The tad of supernatural elements he puts in there is just (sp)icing on the cake, as the horrifying reality is what stays with you long afterwards. Recommended!

An interesting historical fact from the age of sail - A little known fact about piracy is that it was wide-spread also in the northern hemisphere, and documented from about 1500 and up to well into the 1800-eds. Here's a list of 10 noteable historic north sea capers: 10-pirates-of-the-north-sea. An excerpt, about the dramatic pirate chase outside the coast of Norway in 1615:

...ten chests of gold, all so heavy it took ten men to carry just oneCollapse )

Nice to see you and to be here at kiss_me_hardy and hope to learn a lot more about the Age of Sail!
